Reimagining Work: Why People Strategy Is Business Strategy

The world of work is rapidly evolving– we are all living through these uneasy and changing times. There are many contributing factors to this, including new technologies and expectations, political, cultural, and economic tensions, and of course, the aftershocks of the pandemic.

I founded Wylie Burke Consulting because I see a better way forward, an opportunity to reinvent the way that organizations and people come together. The reality is, organizations are not designed to keep up with the pace of change, and the expectations of our workforce has drastically evolved. People are unhappy, they are stuck in outdated roles and systems which is creating a lot of friction and disillusionment. The bottom line is that organizations can’t reach their potential and neither can our people.

To add to this, we are facing a global people crisis. As Rainer Strack highlights in his TED Talk, The Workforce Crisis of 2030, this isn’t just a talent shortage—it’s a mismatch of skills, driven by aging populations, declining birth rates, and the growing gap between job demands and workforce capabilities.

It’s time to reimagine how we engage people and how we organize work—to better match skills to priorities.

There are so many collision points here, which is overwhelming and hard to know where to start. This is where Wylie Burke Consulting comes in. Collectively we need to recognize that our People Strategy is business critical and needs to sit with the executive. There needs to be a cohesive approach to rolling out our people plans with our business plans – and this has to be a clearly stated objective for every leader.

We need to understand organizational priorities better, they need to be communicated across the organization, and leaders need to be adept at translating priorities into achievable workplans so their teams can effectively contribute. People are our greatest asset and the most misunderstood and mismanaged. We need to know our talent; we need to understand the vast skills that exist in all corners of our organizations so that we are better able to align our people and skills to the work that needs to get done.

We need to have the right systems and structures in place to improve the flow of work, we need to get rid of the processes that slow us down and create the barriers that cause burnout.

We need to build and develop our leaders with the understanding that leadership is a discipline. Leaders need to have business and organizational acumen, along with enduring soft skills that create the conditions for people and businesses to realize the right results. We need to invest in our leaders, their skills need to be nurtured and developed consistently overtime.

At Wylie Burke Consulting, we help create workplaces where alignment drives capability, where people’s skills are truly leveraged, where purpose and priorities are clear, and where both people and organizations can thrive—together. This work requires courage — if you're ready to rethink your people strategy and unlock the potential inside your organization, we’re here to help.

Lead with clarity. Align with purpose. Elevate your people.
